In addition to guided classroom time, we also provide the children with the opportunity to engage in free play. This type of play encourages spontaneity and creativity; and promotes children’s ability to make choices for themselves. Our curriculum is also designed to help children develop self-help skills and social responsibility for their environment and their classmates. The curriculum responds to children’s desires to explore their environments and expand their understandings. Intellectual development occurs within a child-directed, play based curriculum. An integrated curriculum allows children to pursue learning in a holistic way, without the restrictions often imposed by subject boundaries. In early childhood programs it focuses upon the inter-relatedness of all curricular areas in helping children acquire basic learning tools. An integrated curriculum emphasizes the necessity of making explicit connections between learning experiences in an educational environment and children’s whole lives, including their experiences both inside and outside of the classroom.
